They call themselves the Reef Raff, and they are lots and LOTS of fun!
They've been to Saba before, so they know the island very well, but BOY are they LOUD!

I was wondering, have we been spoiled by the ban of travelers, sitting quietly on our porch or by the pool watching hummingbirds and listening to the palm trees rustling in the wind? (We are not making this up...isn't this YouTube video of the hummingbird frolicking on Saba just peaceful?)

Of course, we've had other customers, but when we're booked solid with an American dive group, Tropics Cafe tends to become extremely loud, especially during breakfast time.

For the fun of it, I googled "Are American's Loud?" and there was quite a fun controversy online.

One find was this:
Here's why Americans are the loudest travelers?
"Yeah, you Americans are super loud. It's not an attack, it's just an honest-to-god, measured-in-decibels statement of fact! There are brass bands that are easier on the ears than an American voice in a crowded restaurant."

Also, on Reddit, there was this question posted:
"Why are Americans so loud? Not posting this in a judgmental fashion, just a curious one. Seems like Americans are always identifiable by the sound of their voice and how loud it is. Is there a cultural reason why Americans tend to speak so loudly, compared to most other people?"

One answer is this:
"Our country is so big we need to shout to hear each other."

Naturally, our dog Hermes is basking in the sun, and when the guests walk by, they just adore him - "These folks love me!" he thinks.

We ALL must admit…it sure is fun having American customers again!

Great work has been done on Saba by the Saba Conservation Foundation (SCF) staff regarding our Nature Trails.

You thought it was strenuous hiking these trails before; imagine rebuilding and improving them! This crew hasn’t stopped during the pandemic, and now

Saba has some new, impressive, and renovated trails to show for it!

Back in July 2018, they started work on the Mary’s Point (Palmetto Point) trail. (What a project that was!) Palmetto Point was the first settlement formed on Saba in the early-17th Century (c. 1629AD). These first inhabitants had links to pirates, and in 1934, due to heavy erosion in the area, residents of Mary’s Point relocated to The Promised Land.

The SCF crew built over 200 steps to the old village, stabilized the steep slope and took out large boulders. There are now also rope railings on the more challenging parts of the trail.

Our Princess Beatrix (our retired Dutch Queen) had one of her first stops at the Mary’s Point trailhead during her one-day visit on a rainy December 12th, 2019.

She went for a quick hike through the rain with her Nordic walking sticks and rain poncho (she is always prepared!) Upon her return, she took off the poncho and then revealed the sign of the new Mary’s Point trail with SCF Director Kai Wulf (who took all these beautiful pictures) and archeologist Jay Haviser

We are thrilled to say - Saba’s Mt. Scenery acquired national park status
(regional, national, and international) in September 2019.
The Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, Carola Schouten,
signed the official document at the SCF office.

In January 2020 - Crispeen Trail was completed. This historical track of almost 1KM connected The Bottom to St. Johns and beyond. The trail now has restored walls, foundations, and steps.

During the pandemic, the SCF also oversaw the building of boardwalks on the top of Mt. Scenery for hikers to reach different lookout points with greater ease. Of course, it’s still the highest point in the Dutch Caribbean and one of our claims to fame.

Starting May 1st, 2021 - Saba is Opening Its Borders!

Saba has reached “Herd Immunity,” – meaning the majority of adult citizens are immune to the coronavirus through vaccination. (Now, let’s hope the rest of the world will follow in our “tiny” but large footsteps).

Saba’s government recognizes people’s desire to COME to Saba and Vacation…
Hiking Mt. Scenery and the beautiful Sandy Cruz Trail,
Diving in Saba’s Marine Park,
Dining out in our village restaurants,
Just to Relax…

VACCINATED people can enter without quarantine
NON-VACCINATED people can come in with a five (5) day only quarantine.

It requires preparation and thought (more than usual) and some tolerance for uncertainty… AND we’re here to assist you every step of the way.

Entry Requirements. (Juliana’s can fill out all the forms for you…NO PROBLEM!)
Travel Safe .
Avoiding busy locations. (It’s Saba! We only have 1400 residents!)
Conscious personal and hand hygiene. (You have the sanitizer bottles ready! Get some Travel size.)
Respiratory etiquette (Come on… use your elbows, you should know that by now!)
Maintaining social distancing of at least 6 feet /1 meter from others. (Personal Space...DUH!)
Use a mask. (Get a personalized Mask)
Avoid cash by using credit and debit cards when possible. (Break out the charge card!)
Follow the same safety precautions you would do at home. (Common Sense!)
Once you’re home, follow the official instructions of authorities after your trip. (You’ll want to be safe in order to visit Saba again!)

Close to 200 women on Saba turned up on Saturday evening, March 6 to attend the International Women’s Day event at Tropic’s Café hosted by the Public Entity Saba and Commissioner of Gender Affairs Rolando Wilson.

MC Suzy Guido kicked off the well-attended event with a poem titled “Strength of a Woman,” followed by a strong message for the women who were present. She said that while it was fine to express big sentiments every year about the power of women on the occasion of international women’s day, it was more important for women to uphold each other every day.

“Why is it that after so much awareness and acknowledgement of a woman’s contribution to life, society, family and work, we still continue to walk in silence amongst each other? Why do we not salute each other’s strength, resilience and sacrifice at all times?”
Guido pointed out that too many times women were obstacles to women themselves. “We are never smart enough, never pretty or thin enough, never enough. By honoring yourself and treating yourself with respect only then can you set the stage for how others treat you. By supporting women, true women empowerment will not only be on March 8, but every single day.”

Commissioner Wilson looked back at the past year which was marked by the COVID-19 pandemic. “It has not been an easy time. Mothers and women in general had to take the lead in their homes to keep the peace and sanity. Women came together to pray for strength, guidance and patience. They gathered to find ways and means to assist each other and others in the community.”

This year’s theme of international women’s day, ‘Women and leadership, achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world,’ was very appropriate, said Wilson. He noted that all women were a leader in their own way by making things happen, by being a positive role model and by working together for a better tomorrow for all. “You are cherished, honored, valued and appreciated for the many contributions you have made.”

Guest speaker Anne-Marie Blaise, care coordinator at the Sacred Heart School gave a powerful speech about leadership. “Celebrate your achievements, say positive words to yourself every day. You have been born for a purpose. Everything about you is a force to be reckoned with.” She said that strong women were made by the storms that they have walked through. She urged women to use that strength in a positive way. Women, Blaise said, have an indestructible strength to get through and to get over. Speaking about effective leadership, she said that an effective leader tried to inspire others, aspired equality. An effective leader was civil-minded, ethical, concerned for others, and showed respect for everyone regardless of gender, race or education.

Four women who made great contributions to Saba’s society received an award during the event. Lynn Costenaro received an award for her contribution to the dive sector and tourism in general. Successful entrepreneur Alida Heilbron received an award, as did Helen Gumbs for her contribution to social housing and Diane Wilson for her contribution to education. Not present to receive an award were: Carmen Caines (hospitality and service sector) and Joanna Hurtault (transportation).

The Public Entity and the organizing committee thanked the sponsors for making prizes available: Big Rock Engineering, Satel, Chez Bubba, Island Flavor, Unique Supermarket, Everyt’ings, Long Haul Bar and Restaurant, E&H Home Center, Ana’s Beauty Salon, Ericka’s Harmony Spa, Bizzy B and Brigadoon Restaurant.

Since the start of this pandemic, Saba has been a very strong and healthy community. Being safe has been the importance island-wide, being protected, and now we’re taking the next step of being vaccinated.

I watched the helicopter land on Saba with the vaccines on Friday February 19th live on Facebook - “How impressive”, I thought.

To my surprise, my friend Chris Johnson was in the helicopter delivering the vaccine to Saba - "How badass!”

I texted him instantly -
"So you’ve touched Saban soil, I see!”
A few minutes later, he texted back -
"Yes! But now I have to leave again. 😢”

Few minutes after that, the helicopter flew over our hotel, and I ran outside and waved; an overpowering feeling of excitement and gratitude came over me!

What a relief, It’s REALLY happening! Is this finally it?
“The light at the end of the tunnel?”

This vaccine is here! The people of Saba are overwhelmingly happy, a way to get out of this situation and have their island safe, but also to be able to travel and finally see family and friends and get back to “normal.”

Juliana’s Hotel and Tropics Cafe believe that for this vaccine to work, we all need it. This pandemic will not stop until everyone is protected. (Not everyone will join us in this belief, but that’s OK. It’s a choice, and this is our blog, so let’s not discuss this here.)

We’re the new front-line people when tourists come in, and we want to protect ourselves and others.

I also saw Governor Johnson live on Facebook welcoming the helicopter; he accompanied the vaccine to the hospital... so real, moving and historic!

All the people involved (government officials, health workers, and countless others) have been under pressure for months. With many different facts and people’s opinions to consider, making difficult decisions, but they did it. I think they did an excellent job protecting Saba and proving themselves as honorable leaders.

On March 1st a total of 1328 vaccinations were administered.
“How lucky are we!”

The first time I heard of Covid-19, I literally giggled...it’s just a flu...WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL...over the next few months more news kept rolling in of people dying, even on other islands, this is close! The news reports were devastating...and on Sunday March 15th (I remember the exact date) the island announced that it was closing its boarders, and by Tuesday our hotel was empty...and honestly, I cried, all the unsureness was overwhelming!

The days became weeks and weeks became months; is this the new normal?
We had to change our life plan! We reevaluate and restructure our business and are still doing this.... BUT we are so lucky, our friends, staff and even government have all come together during this difficult time and they have certainly made it “better”.

It’s made us realize we are ALWAYS fortunate to be on beautiful, peaceful Saba.
I liked my life before the virus more, but it isn't bad now either!

Besides it being a big emotional challenge without tourists and our steady fans coming to Saba. Saba has been the same! We have been living Covid-19 FREE since May 2020 (with a few people testing positive in quarantine), we have had 6 covid-19 infected people, of which non passed away.

Businesses, shops, banks, even dive shops have been open. While the change was strange (only having locals to cater to), it was a fantastic feeling to walk around without a mask and not worry about distancing rules!

Restaurants are open, some have adjusted their menus, and the bars are still having a good time throwing parties.

Besides our weekly TGIF at Tropic’s Café – ‘Tipsy Goat Bar’ - we also had our annual New Year’s Eve White Party and fireworks display. We are always celebrating life daily and having a great time!

Fortunately, our staff has remained with us! We’re deeply grateful for a government subsidy enabling some of our team to stay home with pay, and others approved to work a few hours a week.

- Monica got stuck in Santo Domingo during the first several months and got Covid, but she’s OK - returned home and started working again in September.

- Danly sadly had a stroke in May, which was so hard and sad to ship him off to St.Maarten to get treatment - thankfully, he is well and back cooking up a creative and delicious storm!

The Bottom, Saba – Juliana’s Hotel in the Windwardside on Thursday officially opened its new Captains’ Suites. Under the supervision of hotel owners Wim and Johanna Schutten, the once derelict building, formerly part of the Captain’s Quarter Hotel, was turned into four spacious suites.

During a well-attended festive reception in the afternoon hours, Saba Island Governor Jonathan Johnson performed the opening by cutting a ribbon which was held by the hotel owners. Johnson, on behalf of the Public Entity Saba, wished the owners of Juliana’s much success with this new venture and many happy guests.
“The road to this opening, after nearly 21 years has not been an easy one but with the perseverance and perceptive vision of the current owners Wim and Johanna, I am delighted to officially open the Captains’ Suites which will form part of Juliana’s Hotel. I am happy to know that part of Saba’s history is being restored and engaged under the auspices of these new captains’ suites,” said Johnson in his short address before the ribbon cutting. He said that the addition of four new suites was a welcome addition to “our attractive piece of paradise.”
Commissioner Zagers said in a reaction that the opening of the Captains’ Suites was a very positive development for Saba. “Adding four more high-end rooms will further boost our tourism product. In addition to this, the restoration project was one that has brought back what was once a well-known hotel back to its glory days,” said Zagers.
“This is a big step for us,” said Wim Schutten, thanking the island government for its support in the process of the transfer of the property. “The fact that we are expanding shows that there is a need for more rooms. This is a big improvement for Juliana’s and for Saba’s tourism in general,” said Johanna Schutten.
The four additional suits bring up the total capacity of Juliana’s Hotel up to 18. Construction of the suites started in March this year and was mostly done by locals. The hotel owners made special mention of Leon Hassell, who worked on the original Captain’s Quarters building, and did a lot of work to help build the new suites.
A special element in the suites is the photo book titled the Captains’ Log, produced for the suites by Malachy Multimedia with content from local historian Will Johnson. The book contains historic information and photos on four Saban captains: Capt. William Benjamin “Ben” Hassell, Capt. Thomas Charles Vanterpool, Capt. Ernest Alfred Johnson and Commodore Thomas Simmons. Each suite has the name of one of these captains. The paintings in the suites were made by artist Heleen Cornet, while the throw pillows and throw blankets were made by artist Anna Keene using Japanese Shibori and dyed with local indigo.
Thursday’s opening of the four new suites was not the only joyous occasion at Juliana’s as The Studio, run by artist Anna Keene, was also opened. This, said Island Governor Johnson, “attests to the forward- thinking vision of Wim and Johanna.”
The modern, light studio, created in a large room in the back of the hotel that formerly housed a hair salon and a general store, will offer a wide range of arts and crafts, from weaving and Shibori Japanese tie dye to jewelry making and painting. The Sunday workshops, previously held at Tropics Café, will now take place at the new studio. Tourists may also make use of the studio at other times. Art supplies will be also be for sale.
Juliana’s resident artist Keene could not have been happier with her workspace. “When I retired four years ago, I planned to be an artist on Saba. This has been my dream in the past 10 years: retire on Saba and make art. And the fact that I can now help others to make art is fantastic,” she said.
The area of Juliana’s Hotel will be further upgraded once the Captain’s House has been rebuilt. Owner Carla Nardi, who attended Thursday’s reception, said that reconstruction of the old house will start shortly. It will be an exact replica of the former two-story house with a shingle roof and outside paneling also made of old-style shingles.
“Mr. Will Johnson has provided me with many photos of the old house,” said Nardi. There will be two large bedrooms upstairs. The patio, which once housed the restaurant, will be restored as well. Nardi said she would not run it as a small boutique hotel. “Maybe it will become part of Juliana’s Hotel or possibly rented out as a village.” Nardi bought the property several years ago. “It is a very special, historic place.”
