The King of Butterflies – The Monarch Butterfly at Juliana's

Monarch butterflies are the most beautiful of all butterflies, some say, and are considered the “king” of the butterflies, hence the name “monarch”. There are lots of very cool things to learn about the monarch butterfly and we’ll try to get through most of them here.

Even bees and jackies feed on the milkweed plant
First of all the coolest thing is that they have decided to check in at Juliana's Hotel.
They lay there eggs in the Asclepias "milkweed" plant, which we have growing at Flossie's Cottage.
The only plant they lay their eggs on is the milkweed plant because, the caterpillars only feed on the leaves of this specific plant, which consist of a toxic chemical that actually protects them from their predators. A safe haven or should we say heaven (they are on Saba!)
The U.S Fish and Wildlife Service disclosed recently that because of
weed-resistant material and herbicides around a billion Monarch butterflies have vanished since 1990 and may be leading to the consistent extinction of the Monarchs.
Another cool fact is there Multi-generational migration:
The four generations are actually four different butterflies going through four stages During one year. First the eggs are laid on milkweed plants. Then the monarch butterfly will emerge from the pupa and fly away, feeding on flowers and just enjoying the short life it has left, which is only about two to six weeks.
The fourth generation of monarch butterflies is a little bit different than the first three generations. Instead, this generation of monarch butterflies migrates to warmer climates like Mexico and California (and now even Saba) and will live for six to eight months until it is time to start the whole process over again.
The Monarch in flight.
